European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
