The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
