The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
