Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
